Families of Indians trapped in Libya seek government assistance to bring them back safely
February 24th, 2011 - 12:41 pm ICT by ANIJalandhar, Feb24 (ANI): Anxious family members of Indian immigrant workers, trapped in the civil unrest and anti-government violence in Libya, have sought the assistance of the Indian Government to bring them back safely.
Vimla Kumari, the sister of Ashok Kumar, an Indian immigrant worker trapped in Libya, said: “Both of them (brother and brother-in-law) have gone to Libya. We just want to request the concerned officials to bring our family back. We don’t want anything else.”
Jagir Kaur, the mother of Dharamveer, another Indian whose whereabouts in Libya are yet to be confirmed, also expressed her concern over his safety and return.
“My problem is that, my son had gone to Libya seven months ago and he hasn’t come back. I haven’t received any information about him and neither received any money from him. We are facing a very tough time.”
” Since the last four days, we have been calling him, but he is not taking my calls. Now some violence has occurred there which really concerns me. I am praying for his safe return,” she said.
India’s Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao has given an assurance that the government is taking all possible measures to ensure the safety of the 18000 Indian nationals stranded in Libya.
Varinder Kumar, Deputy Inspector General of Punjab Police, (Jalandhar Range), said: “”In this situation, the High Court’s has issued an order which states that we are supposed to find out addresses of all the 37 migrants from their relatives, friends and parents, who went to foreign country by using fake documents.”
” Apart from this, police superintendents of this region are also trying to get the information about all the victims of the clashes so that we can get more clues about them,” he added.
Reportedly, at least 62 people have been killed in clashes in the Libyan capital Tripoli in the past two days, when security forces cracked down on demonstrators across the country. (ANI)
