Earthen lamp business picks up in Gorakhpur ahead of Diwali
October 29th, 2010 - 2:23 pm ICT by ANIGorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Oct. 29 (ANI): Potters in Gorakhpur are happy lot these days as their business has picked up ahead of Diwali.
Harivansh, a potter, said he was very happy at seeing demand for his earthen lamps picking up pace.
“We are meeting most of the demands for earthen lamps and pots and we are also exporting them to foreign lands,” he said.
Bhola Prasad, another potter, said he wasn’t very pleased with his occupation.
He said he felt the profession does not ensure his financial growth, as he sits idle throughout the year after Diwali gets over.
“There is no benefit in being in this profession as there is no change in the condition of the potters. As lamps and pots are only in demand during the festivals, we sit all idle throughout the year. This does not pay enough for our families and for our children’s school. We have got tired of this profession and we would leave this occupation. Plastic (an industry) has also damaged our work a lot,” said Prasad. (ANI)
