Manmohan Singh New Delhi, Mar 7 (ANI): As the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) ministers arrived in Delhi to submit their resignations to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has asked them to think one last time about their decision.

DMK Parliamentary Party leader T R Baalu said that Mukherjee called him to convey Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi that he and the party should review the decision to pull out of the Government.

Baalu said he told Mukherjee that the decision was taken by the party’s high-powered committee after deep thinking and considering all factors.

He also told the Congress leader that he would convey his views to the DMK chief.

Meanwhile, the six DMK ministers, including MK Alagiri will meet Dr. Manmohan Singh here at 6.30 p.m. and hand over their resignation.

This comes after the DMK decided to pull out of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre after talks between the two parties on seat-sharing for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections failed.

The DMK currently has six ministers in the Union Cabinet, including Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister MK Alagiri and Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran - and four junior ministers - SS Palanimanickam (Finance), S Jagathrakshakan (Information and Broadcasting), D Napoleon (Social Justice and Empowerment) and S Gandhiselvan (Health and Family Welfare).

The decision to pull out of the UPA government was taken at a DMK leadership meeting chaired by party president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, and attended by senior leaders including Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin held in Chennai on Saturday.

The party would, however, continue to provide ‘issue-based support’ to the Central government.

A DMK statement had said that the Congress demand for 63 seats even after the DMK expressed its readiness to concede 60 showed it was not keen on having it as an ally.

“Hence we have decided to pull out,” the statement had said. (ANI)
