Dimapur, Apr 17 (ANI): A one-day workshop for journalists was recently held here to make them more aware of their role in highlighting issues of humanitarian concern and challenges, while covering events in the conflict zones. The workshop was organised by Indian Red Cross Society, Nagaland branch, in collaboration with International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC), New Delhi. The focus of the workshop was on the much talked about and less understood topic: ‘International Humanitarian Law’ (IHL) or rather law of war and the role of the media as unbiased news reporters in conflict situations, besides the practice of safety protocols by reporters in times of war.Nagaland State Information Commissioner Kevinino Meru graced the workshop as the chief guest. Delivering her speech, Meru admitted that she was personally interested in the field of media, and said SIC local media was doing “fairly well”. She, however, added that there was always room for improvement and scope for journalists to take more challenges. The ICRC is committed to responding rapidly and efficiently to the humanitarian needs of people affected by armed conflict or by a natural disaster occurring in a conflict area.IHL is a set of rules, which seek to limit the effects of armed conflict.Several local journalists participated in the workshop and had open discussion with resource persons.
