Diarrhoea claims two lives in Gorakhpur
August 4th, 2010 - 2:50 pm ICT by ANIGorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Aug 4 (ANI): At least two people have died of diarrhoea over the past two weeks in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur District.
Dozens of people are being treated in the various hospitals in Dehri Par village here.
The disease has affected mostly children and women.
“This disease (Diarrhoea) has been affecting the village for the past fifteen days. And about two hundred people are suffering from it. In private hospitals there are medical facilities available, but in the Government hospitals we are not getting the appropriate medical attention and medicines,” said Tarkeshwar, a local.
“No one is being cured by it. Everybody is running to private hospitals to treat themselves. Two people have died so far; one was a girl aged 17-18 and an old man aged 60-65. They died because they were not given medicine on time,” he added.
The doctors here said the diarrhoea outbreak took place due to contaminated water.
The Chief Medical Officer of Gorakhpur, R. N. Mishra, said all precautionary measures are being taken.
“I sent a team of doctors after there was fear and panic in the village. If needed the patients are put on glucose. The situation is under control and everything will be back to normal within two days,” he added.
Diarrhoea caused by stale and rotten food and polluted water, escalates during the summer season since shortage of potable water forces many to rely on water from contaminated sources. (ANI)
