Delhi up to meeting any seismic disturbance: Jaipal Reddy
June 8th, 2010 - 8:52 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, June 8 (ANI): Union Minister for Urban Development S Jaipal Reddy on Tuesday said earthquake-resistant measures would be adopted by all future constructions, as New Delhi is located in a zone prone to seismic disturbances.
Reddy pointed out that Delhi is located in zone four, which is highly prone to earthquakes.
“Top prone area is supposed to be zone 5, but Delhi is just below the top. It is supposed to be located in fourth zone. So problems related to earthquake can always arise. We are sensitizing everybody in regard to future buildings,” said Reddy.
“We have made it compulsory that all future buildings, be it official or private, are built in a quake resistant wing,” he added on the sidelines of the launch of the Global Campaign on Making Cities Resilient here.
The Urban Development Minister further said that guidelines for new buildings that follow earthquake-resistant measures would also be implemented.
“Before sanctioning the new buildings, earthquake resistant measures are to be adopted. As far as question arises of old buildings, they can be retrofitted,” said Reddy. (ANI)
