Delhi traders, consumers hoping for stable onion prices
January 13th, 2011 - 2:43 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Jan 13 (ANI): Onion traders and consumers in New Delhi are hoping for normal prices after weeks of being forced to buy vegetables in low quantities because of high prices.
Azadpur Mandi, Delhi’s main wholesale vegetable market, opened today, a day after traders went on strike in protest against income tax raids.
Consumers expressed relief over the reopening of the market.
Traders and wholesale agents said they expect onions prices to be stable over the next few days.
“Today the situation is calm. There was a lot of chaos yesterday due to the strike and people did not send their stock. Stocks will start coming in once people get to know that the market has opened. Once the stock is in the market. It will definitely change the situation,” said Rajkumar Gupta, a wholesale trader.
Income tax officials have been conducting raids across Delhi to prevent onion hoardings. (ANI)
