Chennai, Jan 21 (ANI): A Joint Action Committee of deemed universities in Tamil Nadu has appealed to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to re-consider the proposed move to derecognise 44 deemed universities.
Professor Padmanabhan, Vice Chancellor of MGR University disclosed this here on Wednesday.
Prof. Padmanabhan said the Central Government’s proposal was a harsh one and it would affect academics in several spheres.
“We all came to a conclusion that we would like to appeal to the various people in MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development), primarily the Minister for Human Resource Development as well as to the Prime Minister to say that any ad-hoc and fast decision like this should not be taken in the interest of students, the number of staff members who are involved and the number of other people who are involved,” he added.
On Tuesday, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal announced that the concept of deemed universities would soon be abolished. This decision came a day after a Higher Education panel had proposed de-recognition of 44 deemed universities.
An expert committee reviewed the functioning of 126 of the 130 deemed universities and found 44 among them unworthy for the status. (ANI)
