Kolkata, Jan 15 (ANI): Former West Bengal Chief Minister and senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Jyoti Basu, who underwent haemo-dialysis late on Thursday evening, is still reported to be very critical.
The haemo-dialysis was done to remove toxins from Basu’s body, as there was a further deterioration in his cardiac and renal functions.
It is reported that he continues to be on ventilator support.
The medical board treating the veteran leader would decide today depending on his condition whether he should be given the treatment again.
AMRI Hospital Superintendent Debashis Sharma had said the medical board would also decide on the need to do a tracheotomy, a surgical incision of the trachea through the neck to make an artificial opening for breathing.
It was reported on Thursday that Basu’s lung congestion had reduced, while his pulse rate and blood pressure was stable.
The veteran leader was admitted to the AMRI hospital in Salt Lake here on Friday (January 1) following a severe chest infection.
The doctors after conducting a proper check-up had earlier detected that he was suffering from slight pneumonia.
Earlier in July 2009, Basu was admitted to the hospital complaining of discomfort in the abdomen and a disturbed sleep. (ANI)
