CPM central committee to decide on Achuthanandan, Vijayan issue today

July 11th, 2009 - 2:45 pm ICT by ANI Tell a Friend -

New Delhi July 11, (ANI): The central committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) is meeting here today to decide on the proposals sent by the party’s politburo on the infighting in its Kerala Unit.

CPM politburo met this morning ahead of the central committee’s meeting, to give final touch to its proposals.

Last week the politburo had failed to decide on the fate of Kerala Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan, and Party’s state unit secretary Pinarayi Vijayan who were indulging in public spat for long time.

According to sources, the Central Committee is expected to be tough on both the leaders for their public spat and a disciplinary action against these leaders cannot be ruled out.

Achuthanandan said the multi-crore SNC-Lavlin scam, in which Vijayan is an accused, has hurt the party’s image, and has to be sacked from the party. On the other hand Vijayan called for an action against Achuthanandan, saying that his statement has broken the discipline of the party.

The tussle between Vajayan and Achuthanandan is not new to the CPM. In 2007, party was forced to suspend both these leaders after they indulged in public spat; the party withdrew their suspension after few months.

If the central committee decides to suspend both these leaders, then Achuthanandan will loose the Chief Minister’s post. In such case State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balkrishnan might emerge as a consensus candidate for the Chief Minister’s post. (ANI)
