CPI-M leaders meet to pick candidates for W. Bengal polls
March 12th, 2011 - 9:57 pm ICT by ANIKolkata, Mar. 12 (ANI): Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders met here on Saturday to decide on their candidates for state assembly elections in West Bengal.
The meeting was held at the CPI-M headquarters on the eve of a meeting of the Left Front.
“The CPI-M is building its state committee to finalize the candidature. And, it is a practice in our state. We have a well-constituted Left Front. Tomorrow is the Left Front’s meeting. So today and tomorrow, the CPI-M state committee is meeting and they will finalize the list of the candidates. It will be finally decided by the Left Front tomorrow and we shall announce this in a press conference,” said Mohammad Salim, a senior party leader.
“I think it will be a very balanced list of candidates. We will have experienced people along with young people and representing different social segments of the society. Our emphasis is on win-ability and we think the way the campaign has progressed so far is good. We are getting excellent response from the people,” added Nilotpal Basu, another leader.
West Bengal will have a six phase election beginning next month. The first phase of polling will take place on April 18, second phase on April 23, third phase on April 27, fourth phase on May 3, fifth phase on May 7 and sixth phase on May 10.
The Left Front has been in power in West Bengal state for more than three decades now.
Presently, it is facing a tough challenge from the Trinamool Congress, the state’s main opposition and an ally of the UPA that heads the Central Government.
Analysts believe the outcome of polls in West Bengal would have a crucial impact nationally. (ANI)
