Cop killed in Kashmir gunfight
September 26th, 2011 - 11:43 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, Sep 26 (IANS) A policemen was killed and another policeman and a soldier injured in a gunfight with separatist guerrillas in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district Monday, police said. The gunfight was still on at 10 p.m.
“Police and 18 Grenadiers of the army had laid a siege around Awathkul forest area falling under the jurisdiction of police station Kralpora this afternoon following specific information about the presence of armed militants in the area,” a police spokesman said here.
The party was fired upon and retaliated, triggering the gunfight, he said.
“One police constable identified as Shiraz Ahmad was killed while another constable, Gulzar Ahmad and an army soldier sustained a bullet injury in the encounter,” he said.
“The injured have been evacuated from the site. The encounter is still going on,” the spokesman said at 10 p.m., adding reinforcements had been rushed to the area.
