Commonwealth readmits Pakistan

London, May 12 (ANI): The Commonwealth decided on Monday to readmit Pakistan, suspended last year when President Pervez Musharraf declared emergency rule.
In a statement issued at a news conference in London, the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) said the suspension would be lifted immediately.
“It (CMAG) decided that Pakistan is now restored to the councils of the Commonwealth,” the statement said.
CMAG is a group of nine Commonwealth nations which deals with violations of the organisation’s rules on democracy.
Pakistan was suspended in November after Musharraf failed to meet a deadline to lift emergency rule and resign as army chief.
The readmission is reportedly being considered in the wake of Islamabad meeting many of the conditions set by the Commonwealth, including the creation of a democratically elected government and Musharraf stepping down as army chief.
The Commonwealth is a grouping of mostly former British colonies with a population of 1.8 billion. (ANI)
