College teacher gets bail in perjury case
May 5th, 2010 - 8:23 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 5 (IANS) A city court Wednesday granted bail to college teacher S.A.R. Geelani, acquitted in the 2002 parliament attack case, in a case of tendering a false address in a judicial proceeding.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Kaveri Baweja allowed the bail plea of Geelani on furnishing a personal bond and a surety of Rs.20,000 each.
Geelani, who teaches in Delhi University’s Zakir Husain College, had stood surety for Mirza Iftikhar Hussain, who was recently acquitted in the 1996 Lajpat Nagar bombing.
Additional Sessions Judge Nivedita Anil Sharma Tuesday ordered start of perjury proceedings against Geelani for giving a wrong address while standing surety. The matter was later referred to the CMM’s court.
The teacher stood surety for Hussain in a 2008 case of attacking a jail inmate.
Geelani filed an affidavit as surety in the court of Sharma last month, in which he allegedly gave a false address. In the affidavit, he mentioned 568/22, Moti Masjid Road, Zakir Nagar, New Delhi, as his residential address.
However, the police found that Geelani was not residing at the given address. The police informed the court that Geelani stayed at that address nearly three years ago.
