CII felicitates Dr. R K PachauriDecember 15th, 2007 - 5:05 pm ICT by admin
New Delhi, Dec 15 (ANI): Congratulating Dr R K Pachauri for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in his capacity as the Chairman of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Sunil Kant Munjal, former President of the CII and Chairman, the Hero Corporate Service Limited, has said that the climate change is an important issue for everyone, including India.
Dialogue on concerns of sustainability, Green House Gas emissions, Climate Change has been on in CII for quite some time, and the confederation has established two centres of excellence CII Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre, and CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development to respond to these concerns.
Munjal urged Dr Pachauri for assistance to make CIIs efforts more sustainable and meaningful.
Dr Tarun Das, chief mentor of the CII, said that Dr Pachauri is a far-sighted man who had established TERI many years ago, and focussed on environment.
He has integrity of purpose and travelled a million miles, he added.
Dr. Pachauri credited former US Vice President Al Gore for generating awareness on Climate Change.
Recalling the ongoing extended conference on Climate Change at Bali, he said that the main bone of contention between the EU and the US, Japan, Canada is the agreement on mandatory emission targets.
Dr Pachauri said that the future will be a low carbon society, and urged the Indian industry to be at the vanguard of this change.
The Fourth Assessment Report of the IPCC has brought out the inevitability of reduction in emissions if the worlds climate is to be stabilised at levels that have been assessed distinctly.
For instance, for an equilibrium temperature increase of 2-2.4 degree Celsius, the world can at best allow emissions to increase up to 2015 beyond which they must decline, Dr Pachauri said.
The power and promise of collective scientific endeavour, which, as demonstrated by the IPCC, can reach across national boundaries and political differences in the pursuit of objectives defining the larger good of human society, he added. (ANI)
