Chidambaram embarks on three day visit to Bhutan
August 21st, 2009 - 10:04 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Aug.21 (ANI): Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Friday left for Bhutan on a three-day official visit during which he is likely to discuss issues related to border security and activities of northeast militants.
During his visit, Chidambaram will meet King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Prime Minister Jigmi Y Thinley, former king Jigme Singye Wangchuck, Minister for Home and Cultural Affairs Minjur Dorji and other leaders.
“The visit will enhance bilateral relations between India and Bhutan and cooperation in different common areas,” a Home Ministry official said on Friday.
Chidambaram is expected to discuss issues related to security along border and activities of northeast militants besides others, sources said.
Bhutan was a major base for banned ULFA and NDFB militants till 2003 when the country’s Royal Army launched a major offensive against them to flush them out of its soil.
Meanwhile, Home Secretary G K Pillai is in Manipur to review the security situation in that troubled state.
During his three-day stay, Pillai will hold discussions with Governor Gurbachan Jagat, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and top civil and security officials. (ANI)
