Madurandhgam (Tamil Nadu), August 17 (ANI): The third edition of ”The Palar Challenge-2008” an annual off-road event for the four wheels drive (4×4) was held in Chennai.
The three-day annual event, which concluded on Sunday, was conducted by Jeep Thrills at the dry Palar river bed at Madurandhgam town near Chennai pushing the man and machine to the limits.
Jeep Thrills is India ‘’s first and only internet forum dedicated to jeeps, four-wheel drive (4×4) and off-road events and has strength of 700 members.
The event ”The Palar Challenge” is a real test for man and machine as the event on the Palar river bed involves driving on terrains ranging from sand and rocks to mud and water crossings.
Organiser of this event Major Roy said that the event helps participants to develop their various driving skills.
This kind of an off-roading event develops a lot of skills in the people like your mechanical skills because everybody has to maintain and look after his own vehicle, secondly your team skills because you are all working in a team, leadership skills and communication skills. We have no age or sex barrier only thing is that you have to have is to be old enough to have a driving license, said Major Roy.
The contest also included challenges such as changing tyres without a tool-kit, extracting a jeep from knee-deep slush and timed runs.
About 20 vehicles which participated in this year’’s challenge included Maruti Gypsy MG410, Toyota Land Cruiser FJ80, M&M Jeep CJ3B and Nissan Patrol.
It was the sheer power of four wheel drive combined with the girt and determination of a bunch of adventurers from all over the country who said that it was a great learning experience for them.
Before I came to these off-roading events especially ”The Palar Challenge” all I knew of a ”Jeep” was that it was a Four-Wheel Drive (4×4) vehicle with a little off-road capabilities. Only after coming to these events and seeing so many different varieties of jeeps with lot of modifications done like modified engines, differential locks set up and a lot more new things I came to know that so many modifications can be possible in a jeep, said Rajkumar, one of the participant.
The Palar Challenge is a team based competitive trial event where participants are divided into random teams and compete with each other and is different from cross country and raid-rallies.
The Palar Challenge promotes ecologically friendly driving techniques and encourages team based outdoor activities.
By participating in these kind of events you get to know various driving techniques. Everyday you drive your vehicle in third or fourth gear but when you drive here you have to drive your jeep on sand and in the water. You come to know how to approach and how to descend from a hill; you know what a break is over angle and what a lean angle is. These are all the things what you get to know when you are participant in an event like this, added N. Vinoth , a team members of award wining ”Team A”.
There are no cash awards, but the winning ”Team A” walked away with the ”Palar Challenge-2008” trophy and a one week’’s stay at the leading five-star luxury hotel in the city. (ANI)
