Centre would create institution of CDS only with political consensus
December 16th, 2009 - 4:52 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): Defence Minister A K Antony announced on Wednesday in the Rajya Sabha that the government would create institution of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) only after consultation with all political parties.
In a written reply Antony stated, ” The Defence Minister has written to leaders of various national level parties for their views on this issue (creation of institution of CDS). Government will take a decision after completion of consultations.
In April 2000, the then NDA Government headed by A B Vajapayee constituted a Group of Ministers (GoM) to review the national security system in its entirety and in particular, to consider the recommendations of the Kargil Review Committee and to formulate specific proposals for its implementation.
The GoM report on ‘Reforming the National Security System’ recommended for the creation of the institution of Chief of Defence Staff.
The committee presented its report to the government in February 2001.
“The government approved the recommendations of the GoM report except those pertaining to institution of the CDS, for which it was decided that Government will take a view after consulting various political parties, Antony said. (ANI)
