Central excise, customs and service tax officials stage protest for promotions, better wages
April 21st, 2011 - 7:46 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Apr. 21 (ANI): Superintendents of Central Excise, Customs and Service Tax observed a massive Shantigoshthi at the Jantar Mantar here today.
Officers from every corner of the country participated wearing Gandhi-caps as the second step of Satyagraha.
The program was started on Central Excise Day (February 24) by wearing black badges throughout India. Inspectors and Group ‘D’ Officers also took part in the program on calls for staging peaceful protests given by their associations.
The officers are demanding promotions, better pay scales and improved working conditions. A memorandum containing 16 demands has been sent to the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister in this regard.
The central excise, customs and service tax officers claimed that their counterparts in the Government of India are getting up to six promotions, while they were retiring after one promotion in a service career of 35 to 40 years.
They said this results in huge differences in salary, pension and other retirement benefits.
The officers said they would observe a hunger strike on May 6 at the same venue and would go on mass casual leave on May 27. Protests would also take place during the Monsoon session of Parliament. (ANI)
