Kolkata, Mar 21 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) prayed for slapping abetment to suicide charge against industrialist Ashok Todi and other accused before a city court here on Monday in connection with the murder case of computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rahman in September 2007.

The CBI counsel, Partha Tapaswi, submitted before Amit Chattopadhyay, ninth fast track court of City Sessions Court, that Rizwanur’s wife Priyanka had written to her father Ashok Todi in Hindi before leaving her house that she was going to marry Rizwanur.

Tapaswi produced before the court the letter and other documentary evidence in support of his argument that the accused directly provoked the Kolkata-based design professional to commit suicide.

He further submitted before the court that the police had gone to Rizwanur’s house without registering an FIR and asked him to send Priyanka back to her father’s house.

The CBI counsel prayed that charges under section 306 of the IPC be framed against seven persons before the actual trial in the case, for which hearing is being held, begins.

Three police officers, including IPS officer Ajay Kumar, figure in the list of seven accused along with Todi.

The Supreme Court had earlier on March 1 set aside a Calcutta High Court order for a fresh Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into Rizwanur’s death.

The apex court also said that no further custody was needed for Rizwanur’s father-in-law Ashok Todi, an industrialist based in Kolkata.

A Bench of Justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan had on February 22 reserved its verdict after concluding the hearing on cross appeals filed by Todi. The Calcutta High Court had on May 18 directed the CBI to start fresh investigation into Rizwanur’s murder case.

The court had affirmed that the investigation is inadequate and asked the agency to start a fresh investigation in the case.

Rizwanur’s body was found on the railway tracks between Biddhanagar Road and Dum Dum Junction on September 21, 2007, almost a month after his marriage to Todi’s daughter Priyanka.

Though police is convinced that it was a case of suicide, Rizwanur’s family members are not convinced and have moved the higher courts for a CBI inquiry.

Rizwanur was a 30-year-old computer graphic trainer working for a multi-media center.Todi heads the Rs. 400 crore firm Lux Hosiery.

It is believed that Rizwanur and 23-year-old Priyanka Todi secretly wed on August 18, 2007 with the help of the special Marriage Act and in the presence of close friends and colleagues. (ANI)
