Campaigning gains momentum in poll-bound Assam

Guwahati, Apr 8 (ANI): Leaders of various political outfits are leaving no stone unturned to woo voters in Assam as campaigning for the second and final phase of elections ends on Saturday.
The top brass of the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and All India United Democratic Front are undertaking whirlwind election campaign tours.
The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, on Thursday said the Congress Government is devoted to the development of all communities and sections of the society.
“In last seven years, under the leadership of Congress, the UPA Government has undertaken several steps for the betterment of the common people. With the help of the ‘Bharat Nirman’ programme various basic amenities like roads, drinking water, electricity and houses have been provided in the villages,” said Dr. Singh.
The Prime Minister, who addressed an election rally in Assam’s Darrang District, pulled up the opposition on failed promises.
“I am confident that the people will not be misled by the fake promises of the opposition parties like AGP and BJP. In fact, I hope that the people will take a decision based on the performance by the Congress Government, as compared to the AGP Government,” he added.
Senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani had on Wednesday asked the voters in Assam to see that their franchise did not give power to the corrupt, but to honest people who work for them and their state’s welfare.
“Voting is a sacred right given to you by the Constitution. Use it judiciously to elect only honest and corruption-free candidates,” he said.
Advani, who addressed an election rally in Raha, said the Centre had been embroiled in corruption scandals.
“We wanted to discuss these issues in the winter session of Parliament demanding the formation of a JPC, but the government was unwilling to do so and no business was conducted for the entire session for the first time,” said Advani.
“But when the CAG, Supreme Court, the Opposition in Parliament and people supported us in our fight against corruption, only then the government agreed to a JPC,” he added.
The BJP veteran also made an appeal to the people to vote for the BJP for the welfare and development of Assam and the nation as a whole.
An estimated 65 per cent of the electorate cast its vote in the first phase of assembly elections in 62 constituencies of Assam.
64 assembly constituencies spread over 14 districts will vote in the second phase of elections to be held on April 11. Results are due on May 13. (ANI)
