BSNL offers mobile coverage to Amarnath pilgrims

New Delhi, June 23 (IANS) Over three lakh pilgrims to the Amarnath shrine this year need not worry about keeping in touch with their kins across the country. The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has assured them of mobile phone connectivity all the way up to the 13,500-foot cave.
“Customers from any other state having BSNL or MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited) post-paid connection with roaming facility and all BSNL mobile customers from Jammu and Kashmir state will have almost continuous mobile service right up to the holy cave,” the state-owned BSNL aid in a statement.
Mobile tower at the base camp of Baltaal, Domail and Chandanwadi were made operative in May, well ahead of the annual yatra, to help the army, paramilitary forces, Shri Amarnath Shrine Board and langar organisers to make arrangements for the travellers.
BSNL has also made special arrangements at the base camp to provide pre-paid mobile connections for the travellers, for which they will have to carry passport size photographs, and identity and address proof with them.
The annual Amarnath pilgrimage, which is scheduled to begin June 29 this year, is undertaken by pilgrims from all over the country to reach the cave shrine, devoted to Lord Shiva.
