March 8th, 2009 - 6:36 pm ICT by ANIBy: Ravinder Singh / Savinder Singh Amritsar, Mar. 8 (ANI): Hundreds of school children, volunteers and doctors joined the mass awareness rally to create awareness about breast cancer in Amritsar. MKC Roko Cancer Charitable Trust in association with Indian Medical Association organized walk for life, and a free medical camp at the BBK DAV College for Women where mammography tests were conducted on 40 women. People will at least realize what we are doing. They recognize the motive behind organizing the rally and will discuss it with their family members and villagers. To spread awareness we are distributing pamphlets and making people aware through this medium, a volunteer at the rally said. Britain based Ajinder Pal Singh Chawla launched `Roko Cancer Campaign in 2005, and a fully equipped Mobile Breast Cancer Detection Unit soon became functional in Punjab. We have examined over 25-30 thousand cases of women. Our teams are making visits to various states like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Hyderabad, Maharashtra, North Maharashtra, North Karnataka, Goa, Chennai and Bangalore to examine cancer in women, Chawla said. Every year over 80,000 women in India are affected by breast cancer and out of these, 30,000 women die without knowing that they suffer from the disease. According to health experts lack of awareness is the reason why this disease has witnessed a steady rise. (ANI)
