Border officials of India, Bangladesh discuss security issues in Delhi
March 12th, 2011 - 8:12 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Mar. 12 (ANI): Border officials of India and Bangladesh met for the 33rd Border Co-ordination Conference here to discuss security issues and measures
Addressing a news conference on Saturday, Border Security Force Director General Raman Srivastava, said all possible steps would be taken to avoid fire and casualties on the India-Bangladesh border.
Both sides agreed to take effective steps to reduce incidents of killings by using non-lethal weaponry.
“During this meeting we have discussed, in fact, I have assured the DGP that we will continue to maintain the utmost restraint on the Bangladesh border to the extent possible to avoid fire and casualties,” said Srivastava.
“We have also decided to induct non-legal weaponry along the Bangladesh border in certain selected vulnerable areas as an experiment, and if it works, if it contributes to the lessening of casualties and more effective border controls, we will expand this to cover the entire border,” he added.
His Bangladesh counterpart Major General Mohammad Rafiqul Islam agreed to intensify patrolling on their side of the border, and to take measures to restrict the movement of criminals in the area.
Issues related to the implementation of the Joint Border Management Plan, including measures to prevent the smuggling of fake Indian currency notes and narcotics, the prevention of human trafficking and other security-related matters were discussed during the conference.
Both sides also agreed to complete the joint inspection of the remaining 20 patches out of the 46-unfenced priority patches proposed by India within 150 yards of the border.
Major General Islam said information exchange by company and battalion commanders of both countries would yield better results.
India shares a 675-kilometer-long border with Bangladesh in the northeast. This border has been fenced to prevent the movement of illegal migrants from either side. (ANI)
