Bharatiya Janata Party Pune, Apr 25 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists staged a demonstration here on Tuesday demanding the resignation of sacked Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi as a lawmaker representing their city.

Condemning Kalmadi’s illegal acts, Vikas Matkari, a local functionary of the BJP said that he has no legal or moral right to continue the position as a parliamentarian as such he should resign immediately.

“Bharatiya Janata Party demands the organiser of the 19th Commonwealth Games, Suresh Kalmadi’s immediate resignation as federal lawmaker (Member of Parliament). As he has been suspended by Congress Party he has no legal or moral right to continue in that position,” said Matkari.

Kalmadi was suspended from Congress party hours after his arrest on Monday on charges of manipulating the award of contracts for the sporting extravaganza of 2010.

Matkari further said that the protest would continue until Kalmadi fulfills their demand.

He said that Kalmadi has not only tainted his very own image, but also stained the name of the city, which is usually linked to Lokmanya Tilak, the well-known social reformer and revolutionary fighter.

“Bharatiya Janata Party would continue the protest until Suresh Kalmadi resigns as a Member of Parliament. It is shameful that Kalmadi has tarnished the name of the city of Lokmanya Tilak, a revolutionary freedom fighter and social reformer. He has stained the name of the city by indulging in illegal activities and by accepting gratifications for sports,” added Matkari.

A Delhi court today sent Kalmadi to police custody for eight days.

The CBI had earlier asked Kalmadi to appear before it on Monday to clarify some new issues, which surfaced during the visit of the agency’s officials to London in connection with Queen’s Baton Relay scam.

Kalmadi had earlier expressed his inability to appear before the CBI citing his foreign visit, saying he would return home only after April 19. But even after returning from his visit abroad, he did not turn up before the sleuths, saying he was still not in Delhi, sources said.

Kalmadi has been accused of sanctioning payments to AM Films and AM Car at rates that were hugely inflated. (ANI)
