New Delhi, July 12 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday demanded that accountability should be fixed in the tragic incident of bridge collapse in the capital, which killed five persons and left many injured.
“I think the government should carry out investigation. Those who have died should be given proper compensation and accountability should be fixed,” said Rajnath Singh, President of Bharatiya Janata Party.
Meanwhile, Elattuvalapil Sreedharan resigned as Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) chief, owning up moral responsibility after a section of an overhead bridge collapse in the capital.
He sent his resignation letter to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Tejinder Khanna and chief of Delhi state, Sheila Dikshit.
“I have been in charge of this project right from the beginning and I personally feel that I have to take full moral responsibility for this accident and having taken moral responsibility for this, I have decided to resign from the post of Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. I have sent my resignation letter to the Chief Minister and Lieutenant Governor which is being dispatched,” said E. Sreedharan, Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in a news conference in New Delhi.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, led by the 77-year-old Sreedharan, has enjoyed strong government support so far and is not shackled by the delays, cost-overruns and red tape that have plagued almost all major projects in India for decades.
The metro first phase was opened within a budget of 2.3 billion dollars and nearly three years ahead of schedule.
Among the subsequent phases are the one which will cost 4.5 billion dollars and boasts a high-speed airport link beneath the capital’s clogged and at times chaotic roads, is on track for when the city of 16 million hosts the 2010 Commonwealth Games. (ANI)
