BJP candidate in Kerala charged for violating election code of conduct
March 7th, 2011 - 4:48 pm ICT by ANIPalakkad (Kerala), Mar.7 (ANI): A Bharatiya Janata Dal (BJP) candidate was charged with violating the Code of Conduct of the Election Commission, ahead of state polls in Kerala.
C. Uday Bhaskar, a candidate from Kerala’s Palakkad constituency, distributed free saris to around 800 women on Sunday, in a function, which was jointly organized by the youth wing of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP) and another voluntary organisation.
Later, the members of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist together with their youth wing, Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), ransacked the venue and shouted slogans against the act.
The Congress Party also condemned the act, and said that the Election Commission should be informed of this violation of the code of conduct laid down by them.
Ramesh Chennithal, president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), said: “Such acts are not fair. After the Code of Conduct has been announced, trying to influence people by distributing saris and violating the Code of Conduct are not proper. We will bring all these to the notice of the Election Commission.”
The BJP and the SNDP said the sari distribution was a personal matter, and the party has no part to play in it.
The district collector has, however, ordered an inquiry into the matter.
State polls are scheduled to be held in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry on April 13 2011. (ANI)
