Kolkata, Apr 1 (ANI): Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee organised another huge padayatra in a bid to oust the Left Front from its 33 years in power in West Bengal.
Taking her campaign through Muslim-dominated areas, she marched for seven kilometers from Rajabazar in the north to Ballygunge in the south of the city.
Thousands of party supporters and several top leaders marched through the prestigious Assembly segments of Chowringhee, Entally and Ballygunge.
In contrast, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has confined his campaign to his constituency of Jadavapur.
Bhattacharjee accepted that there have been problems in West Midnapore.
“The government did endeavour to address these issues and reforms have been taken place. There is still scope for further reforms,” he said.
He said all political parties must work together to fight the Maoists menace.
Bhattacharjee said that he was astonished by Banerjee’s contradictory statements over Maoists in the region.
The state will have elections in six phases. The first phase of voting will take place on April 18, second phase on April 23, third phase on April 27, fourth phase on May 3, fifth phase on May 7 and sixth phase on May 10.
The total number of assembly constituencies in West Bengal is 294, of which 68 are reserved for the Scheduled Castes and 16 for the Scheduled Tribes.
The Election Commission has said that polling will take place at 51,919 polling stations. (ANI)
