Both the treasury and the opposition sides of the Australian Parliament made statements in both houses during the first anniversary of the terror strike on India’s financial capital.
Making a statement in the House of Representatives, Trade Minister Simon Crean said: “Today we remember the attacks and we remember those who lost their lives, including two Australians. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims of this senseless attack.”
“Our thoughts are also with the survivors, who suffered through a terrifying ordeal. We pay tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of all those who risked their lives to save others,” he added.
The Australian Parliament also appreciated the valour exhibited by the Indian security personnel during the conflict.
Australia applauded the efforts of the Indian Government to bring to justice the perpetrators of the callous and despicable Mumbai attacks.
“Today, as we remember the victims, we need to remind ourselves that the threat of international terrorism continues. We must remain vigilant and work together to defeat terrorism in all its forms,” Crean said.
“Australia and India are united in the fight against terrorism. We share a desire to promote regional and global security, as well as a common commitment to democracy, freedom, human rights and the rule of law,” he added.
In his statement, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Nick Minchin described the 26/11 attacks as a horrific event and a great tragedy.
“That this tragic event happened upon Indian soil is something that touched the hearts of all Australians and people all over the world,” Minchin said.
