Last phase of Assam panchayat polls beginsJanuary 24th, 2008 - 11:11 am ICT by admin
Guwahati, Jan 24 (ANI): Polling for the fourth and final phase of the panchayat elections in Assam has begun this morning, amidst tight security.
The polling is underway at 728 voting centers of Darrang district.
Over 4,50,000 voters are expected to decide the fate of 3659 candidates.
Members in 14 Zilla Parishad, 75 Anchalik Parishad, and 750 Gaon Panchayat constituencies, besides 75 Presidents of Gaon Panchayats will be elected through today’s polling.
The voting will continue till 4.00 p.m. Tight security arrangements have been made in all polling centres to ensure free and fair elections. Around 70 per cent of the voters had exercised their franchise in the first phase of the polls on December 31, while around 72 per cent cast their votes in the second phase on January 4. An estimated 74 per cent of the electorate had exercised their franchise in the third phase of polling on January 9.
Counting of votes will take place on January 28. (ANI)
