Assam, Meghalaya CMs meet to resolve border dispute
June 6th, 2010 - 12:37 pm ICT by ANIDispur, June 6 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogai and his Meghalaya counterpart Mukul Sangma met here to find ways to resolve the long-pending boundary dispute between the two states.
The boundary dispute has often led to clashes.
Talking to reporters after meeting, Sangma said: “We have decided to have a committee constituted at the level of Chief Secretaries of the two states. The modalities would be worked out within 45 days for consideration for further discussion and final settlement”.
“No new settlement shall be allowed in the sensitive areas, and there would be free flow of information between the two states to ensure that ‘there is no misgiving or misunderstanding’,” he added.
“In order to maintain peace in the disputed area, we want the Deputy Commissioners of the Police in Assam and Meghalaya to meet once in a week. All other development activity would also go ahead,” said Gogoi.
The meeting comes in the wake of the recent incident of firing between the police of the two states in Langpih village.
The border region of Langpih has been a bone of contention between the two states since decades. (ANI)
