Army seizes cache of arms and ammunitions in ManipurDecember 24th, 2008 - 4:53 pm ICT by ANI
Imphal, Dec 24 (ANI): Authorities in Imphal seized huge quantities of arms and ammunitions from suspected militants.
Talking to mediapersons, Brigadier Balbir Singh, Commander, 26 Sector Assam Rifles, said, “A huge quantity of arms and ammunition was seized from militants in the form of heavy caliber weapons that is the LMGs, AK-47s, RPGs and various smaller weapons.”
“By seizing these we have been able to avert major tragedy in the area,” he added
According to Brigadier Singh, successful operations were launched by 26 Sector Assam Rifles, which unnerved various militant organizations operating in the area.
Manipur has been battling separatist insurgency by more than half-a-dozen major guerrilla groups for more than two decades.
More than 20,000 people have died in the rebellion in Manipur. The region is home to more than 200 tribes and ethnic groups. (ANI)
