Army in Kashmir pays tribute to martyrs on Vijay Diwas

Srinagar, Dec 16 (IANS) The Indian Army Friday paid tribute to its martyrs on the 40th anniversary of its victory in the 1971 India-Pakistan war that led to the birth of Bangladesh.

At a solemn function here, Srinagar-based Chinar Corps commander, Lt. Gen. S.A. Hasnain, laid a wreath at the war memorial in the Badami Bagh cantonment.

“The 16th of December every year is celebrated as ‘Vijay Diwas’ and commemorates the Indian army’s victory in the 1971 war,” a press released issued by the army said.

“GOC (general officer commanding) Chinar corps today (Friday) recounted the sacrifices made and the glories achieved by the Chinar Corps. He also congratulated all ranks for putting in their best efforts to ensure a peaceful 2011 in the Valley and exhorted them to continue to strive towards excellence”.

Later in the day, a special function was organized where Lt.Gen. Hasnain felicitated the brave soldiers who got wounded during various counter-insurgency/counter-terrorism operations in the Valley.
