Apunba Lup now dares to take out torch rally in curfew bound Imphal
August 5th, 2009 - 7:02 pm ICT by ANIImphal, Aug 5 (ANI): Security in Manipur has been beefed up after leading social organization Apunba Lup (AL) announced plans to take out a torch rally in defiance of a curfew.
Curfew has been imposed since Tuesday night in the Manipur capital, in the wake of a
48 hour general strike called to protest the killing of 27year old Chungkham Sanjit.
Security forces have been deployed in sensitive locations of Imphal.
The police has appealed to the people to remain inside during curfew especially in the sensitive Imphal East and Imphal West districts.
The Apunba Lup is demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, the termination of policemen involved in the July 23 incident and a judicial probe over the encounter.
Meanwhile, leaders of the Manipur People’s Party (MPP), the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the Manipur State Congress Party and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) separately called on Governor Gurbachan Jagat and urged him to intervene. (ANI)
