Andaman & Nicobar to get two vessels for coastal securityJanuary 27th, 2009 - 11:08 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, Jan 27 (IANS) The home ministry Tuesday said it would be providing two boats to the administration of Andaman and Nicobar Islands on priority basis under the coastal security scheme. “Two boats will be delivered to them in April. In the meanwhile, boats may be hired locally,” the ministry said here in a press statement.
“This is one of the decisions Home Minister P. Chidambaram conveyed in his letter addressed to the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands today (Tuesday). Enhanced financial powers have been delegated to the Lieutenant Governor,” the statement added.
According to the ministry, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands will also be covered for issue of identity cards and multi-purpose national identity cards in the first phase.
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands administration is tightening its vigil along the coasts by establishing additional marine police outposts in view of the current security situation.
