Alleged insult to the prophet sparks off violence in Ranchi

May 1st, 2008 - 7:54 pm ICT by admin -

Ranchi, May 1 (ANI): Violence sparked off in Ranchi following agitation by the students of Muslim community to protest against the alleged insult to the prophet in a question asked in the exam on Thursday.

Muslim students of Ranchi University alleged that one of questions in the History paper was an insult to Prophet Mohammad as it had put him in bad light.

The students appearing for the exam took out a protest and attacked the property in the University.

The police resorted to baton charge to control the situation.

All we wanted was that some action should be taken against those who had set the question paper. And we had taken out a protest against the concerned authorities when police came and resorted to baton charge. They hit us with batons mercilessly, said Zameel Khan, leader of the Minority group.

The students demanded that those involved in setting of the question paper should be arrested.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, Madhu Koda, said that the university has been directed to look into the matter and investigate the entire episode.

I cannot say if it was a political act or not, but we have directed the university to look into the matter. Rest, we cannot rule out the fact that some people might want to spoil the peace in the region and instigate others also, said Koda.

He also expressed concern over the row and said that one cannot rule out that it could be the work of the miscreants who wanted to disturb communal harmony.

According to reports, Muslim organizations in the region have condemned the incident and demanded immediate action. (ANI)
