Accused Kashmiri police officers seek bail
July 25th, 2009 - 11:36 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, July 25 (IANS) Two police officers, arrested for their alleged involvement in the rape and murder of two women in Shopian town in south Kashmir, moved their bail application in a court Saturday, a day after the apex court disposed of their petition.
The Supreme Court while disposing of the special leave petition (SLP) of Javed Iqbal Mattoo, former superintendent of police Shopian, and Rohit Baskotra, deputy superintendent of police, said the applicants would be at liberty to move their bail application before the sessions court at Shopian.
The apex court also set aside the Jammu and Kashmir High Court order that all the bail applications in the case must be forwarded to it for directions.
Admitting the bail application, the sessions court directed the special investigation team (SIT) probing the incident to furnish the case diary Monday.
Four police officers accused of destruction of evidence and dereliction of duty in the May 30 Shopian rape and murder case were this afternoon presented before the chief judicial magistrate, Srinagar, that extended their remand till July 29.
