7/11 Mumbai trains blast trial to resume Monday
May 23rd, 2010 - 5:01 pm ICT by ANIMumbai, May 23 (ANI): The trial in the 7/11 serial train blasts case is all set to resume on Monday in a special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court in Mumbai.
The trial will be presided over by Special Judge Y.D. Shinde of the MCOCA, against 13 arrested accused, alleged to be members of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).
The Supreme Court had in February 2008 stayed the trial, after one of the accused, approached the court challenging the constitutional validity of MCOCA on them.
On April 25, the Supreme Court has vacated its stay and rejected a petition filed by the accused.
The accused had earlier refused to appoint lawyers demanding for the case to be transferred to a regular court and not before the MCOCA.
On July 11, 2006, in a matter of around 12 minutes, the attackers set off seven bombs in heavily crowded Western Railway suburban trains on the Churchgate-Borivli-Virar sector during the evening peak hours.
The blast left 186 killed and over 700 injured. (ANI)
