7-feet high sand sculpture in Orissa highlights problem of global warming
September 24th, 2009 - 9:59 pm ICT by ANIPuri, Sep 24(ANI): World-renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has sculpted a 7-feet high sand sculpture of goddess Durga and a burning globe on the Puri beach to draw attention to global warming.
Pattnaik used 10 tonnes of sand to create the sculpture, which took him around five hours to complete.
In his creation, Pattnaik has highlighted the problem of global warming by portraying a burning globe behind the face of the goddess wearing green leaves as ornaments.
“We have created this sand art to highlight the importance of green environment during this festive season. Now, climate change is the biggest threat not only to our country, but also to the whole planet. Since many people are devotees of goddess Durga, so, this time I created a sand image of her spreading the message to maintain the environment with green plants,” Pattnaik said.
Several tourists at the beach were absolutely taken aback by his attempt to spread the message, and were all praising the artist.
“This creation underlining the gruesome effects of global warming on our planet is remarkable. He has used the colour green beneath the red one, which symbolizes that danger is taking the world in its clutches. What he has tried to portray is really amazing,” said Alok Gupta, a tourist from West Bengal.
Pattnaik has participated in more than 39 international sand sculpture championships around the world and has also won many awards for the country. (ANI)
