5 nomads killed in Kashmir cloudburst

Srinagar, April 22 (IANS) Five nomads, two of them children, were killed in a cloudburst in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district Thursday while 17 others were rescued by police.
“Bodies of five nomads were found from Bahak Gajimarg in Damhal Hanjipora in Kulgam district today (Thursday). The victims had died from a cloudburst in the area,” a senior police officer told IANS here.

The dead have been identified as Jandu Jan, Maiwa Begum, Kali Begum, Najma, 6, and Salma, 2.

The officer said police reached the spot and rescued 17 nomads who have now been shifted to saver places.

“About 150 animals including sheep and goats have also died,” he added.

Meanwhile, the students of a middle school in Puhro Kokernag village in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district had a narrow escape when another cloudburst struck their school building.

“The students had just gone out for recess at the time. Fortunately, there was also no teacher inside the building at the time of the incident,” a local police officer said, adding the building was damaged.
