2G Scam: PAC unlikely to summit report

New Delhi, Apr. 21 (ANI): The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament, which is headed by senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Murli Manohar Joshi, is unlikely to submit its report on the 2G spectrum scam during its current tenure.
Sources said Thursday that differences still prevail among PAC members over what the final report should or should not contain.
Sources also said that there is also a thinking that submitting report in the current tenure would not be possible, and therefore, the PAC will seek a second tenure.
Meanwhile, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, T.K.Nair, who was asked to appear before the PAC earlier this month, has reportedly submitted a written statement to the PAC on the PMO’s role in the allotment of 2G spectrum.
Earlier, it was stated that the Congress, which heads the UPA Government, is determined not to let a report on the 2G spectrum allocation get finalised by the current committee whose term ends on April 30.
Ruling party sources said PAC chairman Murli Manohar Joshi was keen to finalise the report by that date, but UPA members on the committee were of the view that the PAC should abandon its probe into the alleged scam and rather submit all documents and records to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).
On April 5, the PAC questioned Reliance Communications Chairman Anil Ambani in connection with the 2G spectrum scam probe.
The panel also questioned Etisalat DB Telecom CEO Atul Jham. On April 4, it questioned corporate lobbyist Niira Radia and top industrialist Ratan Tata.
In its 127-page chargesheet, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has criticised the Anil Dhirubai Ambani Group (ADAG) for conspiring to cheat the exchequer of thousands of crores along with former Telecom Minister A Raja and others.
Earlier, the CBI had named three of the top names of the ADAG for abatement of cheating, criminal conspiracy, bribing government servants and forgery. Also, Reliance Telecom Limited itself has been named in the chargesheet for similar offences.
CBI chargesheet said that Gautam Doshi, group managing director, Reliance ADA group; Surendra Pipara, senior vice president of ADAG and Reliance Telecom and Hari Nair, senior VP ADAG, floated Swan Telecom as a front company of Reliance for getting 2G license.
CBI alleged that the trio formed Swan out of funds arranged from Reliance Telecom with the common intention to cheat.
They violated UASL guidelines that a company which was already operating as a telecom service provider in a circle could not through any subsidiary get another license.
Reliance had so far contented that they had only 10 per cent stake in Swan but CBI investigations has busted that claim.
Swan Telecom (now DB Etisalat) chief Shahid Usman Balwa is already in custody in connection with the scam.
The others arrested in connection with the case are A Raja, his personal secretary RK Chandolia and former Telecom Secretary Siddharth Behuria. (ANI)
