2,773 candidates in Tamil Nadu poll fray
March 31st, 2011 - 2:23 pm ICT by ANIChennai, Mar 31 (ANI): A total of 2,773 candidates will contest for seats in 234 Tamil Nadu Assembly constituencies. The deadline for the withdrawal of nominations ended Wednesday evening.
In total, 313 candidates withdrew their nominations and there were 2,773 candidates, including independents, in the fray, an Election Commission release said here.
Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar in Chennai with 31 nominees has the highest number of candidates while Nagapattinam constituency has the lowest number of four candidates.
In Tirupur North, where 151 nominations were filed, 81 papers were rejected and 60 candidates withdrew from contest.
Meanwhile, the Congress which was allotted Krishnagiri constituency in the DMK led alliance was left without a nominee when the Election Commission rejected the nomination of the alternative candidate Syed Giyaz Ul Haq on technical grounds.
Earlier, Hazeena Syed, who had originally been declared the Congress candidate, withdrew her nomination papers.
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi is contesting from Tiruvarur and AIDMK General secretary Jayalalithaa from Srirangam both from the central region.
Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar has clarified that Actor Vijaykanth led DMDK, being an unrecognised party, was given a common symbol, not exclusive symbol.
