August 18th, 2010 - 10:02 pm ICT by BNO NewsUTTARAKHAND, INDIA (BNO NEWS) – At least eighteen children were killed on Wednesday when a school roof collapsed due to a cloudburst in northern India, local television station NDTV reported.
Heavy rains struck the Kapkot area in the northern state of Uttarakhand causing the roof of the Shishu Mandir school in Sumgad village to collapse onto at least 26 students.
The children were buried under the debris and rescue crews arrived to the scene shortly after. Eighteen students were found dead and several others are still believed to be trapped under the debris.
The area has communication issues as connectivity is poor. Access is also complicated due to landslides that have affected the region.
