Women could be endangering careers with weight worries
July 21st, 2011 - 12:26 am ICT by IANSConducted by Dove, the survey of 445 women found almost a sixth of women saying their lack of confidence due to their body shape impacts their working life.
Nearly half of the women questioned also said they felt inadequate at the workplace following their anxieties, Daily Mail reported.
Some 15 percent said insecurities about their appearance had hindered their career progress.
While one in five of the women questioned admitted that body hang-ups affected their daily life.
Linda Papadopoulos, psychologist and author, said: “This doesn’t come as a surprise at all. When you are anxious about something, be it your weight or otherwise, it becomes the predominant thing on your mind.
“This would understandably affect your working life and your focus on your career. When women grow preoccupied with their appearance, they start to think about themselves in the third person.
“They start thinking what would a guy see, or what would another woman see.”
The findings concur with an other study conducted in Iceland in May that said carrying extra weight was detrimental to the employment rate and pay of women.
