Will Prader Willi Syndrome Victim Be Jailed?

July 27, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Will Matthew Hummel really be arrested? The 20 year old boy has been issued an arrest warrant for stealing food from a neighbor’s house. It has been reported that Matthew Hummel is not any ordinary child. He is a victim of a rare genetic disorder called the Prader Willi Syndrome.
According to medical practitioners, anybody suffering from the disease shows a hyperactivity of the brain thalamus as a result of which the body requires food exceeding the natural quantity taken by a normal human.
While his father Travis Hummel is aware of the fact that his son has been a victim of the Prader Willi Syndrome since the age of three, he feels “helpless” at the sight of Matthew suffering. Travis Hummel is planning to send his ailing son to a home for Prader Willi Syndrome patients and is also considering building a fence around his house so that Matthew does not venture into the houses of his neighbors in search of food. It has been alleged by one of the neighbors of the Hummels that Matthew has been stealing food from their house since his teen years, the neighbor elaborating that he feels unsafe in the presence of the boy and thus has lodged a complaint with the local police.
Matthew’s mother Tracine Hummel also harbors the same helpless feelings as his father. In spite of the lady’s efforts to keep her son from touching the food inside their home by keeping food cupboards and refrigerators locked, she has completely failed in her attempts. Matthew Hummel now steps into other houses or even cleans up the locality’s garbage bins to get food.
