- New York, Oct 26 (THAINDIAN NEWS) BMI is the abbreviation of the Body Mass Index. It is a measurement, an assessment of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both the sexes, who are between the ages of 18 and 65 years.
BMI figures are used to indicate if you are overweight, obese, underweight or normal. They are a reflection of the fat stored in your body and thus an indication of whether you are on the heavier side or on the normal side. A healthy BMI score is between 20 and 25. A score below 20 indicates that you may be underweight; a value above 25 indicates that you may be overweight.
These scores are indicative of various things like what diseases could affect you and whether or not you need to take more care of your body.
The formula for calculating the BMI is as follows:
English BMI Formula
BMI = ( Weight in Pounds / ( Height in inches ) x ( Height in inches ) ) x 703
Metric BMI Formula
BMI = ( Weight in Kilograms / ( Height in Meters ) x ( Height in Meters ) )
