July 29th, 2010 - 8:13 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattWashington DC, July 29 (THAINDIAN NEWS) There is a growing campaign in the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS in Washington. Activists and campaigners are promoting the use of the female condom in the streets and even on TV advertisements.
It ought to be mentioned that Washington has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS in the United States. About 3 percent of the population over the age of 12 has HIV or AIDS in the city. That figure is alarming by the standards of United States.
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers any epidemic that affects 1 percent of the population at a particular place as severe.
The use of the female condom in the United States is low because less than 2 percent of Americans have ever tried the condom. But there is a campaign on in full swing to create awareness about the use of the female condom.
The female condom have been available in the United States since 1993, when the FDA gave its approval to the condom but critics say the material used for making the condom reminds them of the doctor’s surgical gloves which turns them off.
