New York, Dec 10 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Even though smokers believe that short-term smoking doesn’t cause any harm, yet this isn’t the case at all. A recent report by the US Surgeon-General states that even a single cigarette is harmful as it immediately causes some lung damage. The report also stated that short-term smoking could also lead to DNA damage, which in turn can lead to a number of diseases, which may be fatal in nature too.

Surgeon-General, Regina Benjamin’s report states that, ”By learning how tobacco smoke causes disease, we learn more about how chemicals harm cells, how genes may make us susceptible and how tobacco users become addicted to nicotine. The answers to these questions will help us to more effectively prevent tobacco addiction and treat tobacco-caused disease.”

This report also adds that the inherent chemicals that are present in the cigarettes are so harmful that they cause distress to the human body ”from the moment they enter your mouth”. And smoking over a period of time is also responsible for decreasing the vitality of the immune system. According to reports, almost 20% of US resident’s smoke and around 443,000 people die each year because of smoking and its ill after effects.
