US releases liquid Tamiflu for children
October 31st, 2009 - 7:03 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattWashington DC, Oct 31 (THAINDIAN NEWS) US has released liquid Tamiflu for children affected from Swine Flu. Swine flu is attacking so many children across the country, some of them even fatally, that federal health officials decided on Friday to release the last of the national stockpile of children’s Tamiflu.
“Even though the winter flu season has yet to begin, flu has now killed 114 children and teenagers in the United States since April”, said Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
On Oct. 1, the government had released 300,000 doses from the national stockpile, after anticipating shortages of liquid Tamiflu for children. On Friday, it released the last 234,000 doses of liquid Tamiflu.
It has ordered more from Roche, its Swiss manufacturer, but that is not expected to arrive before January, Dr. Frieden said.
“The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department does not know how many bottles of Tamiflu it will receive”, spokeswoman Eileen Finnigan said Friday.
Pierce County pharmacies have been preparing pediatric Tamiflu by “taking capsules and opening them up,” mixing the contents with syrup to create a liquid that is taken orally, Finnigan said.
