Unilever recalls 10 million Slim Fast canned drink products
December 8th, 2009 - 2:53 am ICT by Aishwarya Bhatt ( Leave a comment )Englewood Cliffs, Dec 7 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Unilever PLC’s U.S. subsidiary has divulged that it has recalled all canned Slim Fast drink products because of the possibility of bacterial contamination that could cause diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. This recall is expected to affect around a whooping 10 million units, which is quiet a huge recall in terms of sheer scale and size.
The company spokeswoman, said that there is no immediately available figure on the cost of the recall, how long it would take or how much in revenue the product contributes to Unilever’s total sales. The spokeswoman also clarified that the recall affects only the Slim-Fast line of ready-to-drink canned products and not those that come in powder or the snack-bar form.
On Thursday, Unilever’s U.S. office said that the recall is “due to the possibility of contamination with Bacillus cereus, a micro-organism, which may cause diarrhea and possibly nausea and/or vomiting.”
“Out of an abundance of caution, the company is recalling all ready-to-drink products in cans that are currently in distribution centers, on-shelf or in back rooms in retail outlets or in consumers’ homes,” it said in a statement.
The company said it is working to determine the production issue that caused the contamination. It has halted production completely and is focusing its energies on the investigation instead. The FDA, which was notified by Unilever of the possible contamination on Dec. 2, is currently investigating the company’s production facility in Covington.
